"7 Rings" (reso graficamente in minuscolo) è il secondo singolo del quinto album in studio di Ariana Grande, Thank U, Next. È stato pubblicato il 18 gennaio 2019 tramite Republic Records.

Ariana ha descritto la canzone come un "inno all'amicizia" che "si evolve" dal singolo precedente "Thank U, Next", mentre abbraccia un nuovo capitolo. Nel testo, Ariana si apre su come la sua rottura con il comico Pete Davidson la portò a una giornata di shopping compulsivo durante la quale comprò sette anelli di amicizia abbinati per lei e le sue amiche.

A livello commerciale, la canzone ha debuttato al numero uno in 15 paesi, tra cui gli Stati Uniti, diventando il suo secondo singolo numero uno dopo "Thank U, Next", presente nello stesso album.

Una versione dal vivo della canzone è presente in K Bye For Now (SWT Live), che è stato pubblicato il 23 dicembre 2019.

Panoramica

In un'intervista per Billboard, Ariana ha detto: "We needed some retail therapy. You know how when you’re waiting at Tiffany’s they give you lots of champagne? They got us very tipsy, so we bought seven engagement rings, and when I got back to the studio I gave everybody a friendship ring." Dopo quel giorno, Tony Jabaly, che ha venduto gli anelli ad Ariana, ha pubblicato su Instagram una foto con Ariana con la didascalia: "Orgoglioso di aver fatto la vendita dei 7 anelli", in seguito archiviato e modificato in "Oggi è stato un piacere lavorare con Ariana Grande. Una persona così dolce".

In seguito alla pubblicazione di "Thank U, Next", è stata trapelata una presunta lista di brani dell'album che includeva "7 Rings". Grande ha lasciato intendere la canzone più volte nelle sue storie su Instagram. La versione strumentale della canzone è stata usata nel trailer del video musicale "Thank U, Next". Il 26 ottobre 2018, Ariana ha pubblicato su Instagram una sua foto al Dangerous Woman Tour con la didascalia: "u like .... my hair? gee thanks... jus bought it". La canzone è stata confermata il 1° dicembre 2018.

Il 3 gennaio 2019 Ariana ha confermato su Twitter che la canzone sarebbe stata il secondo singolo estratto da Thank U, Next. La data di uscita e la copertina della canzone sono state rivelate il 10 gennaio 2019.

La canzone campiona "My Favorite Things", eseguita da Julie Andrews dal film del 1965 The Sound of Music. Interpola anche The Notorious B.I.G.'s "Gimme The Loot" nel bridge.

Il 1° febbraio 2019 è stato pubblicato un remix della canzone con il rapper americano 2 Chainz.

La canzone ha debuttato al numero uno sulla classifica mondiale di iTunes dopo la sua uscita. Ha anche debuttato al numero sei e in seguito ha raggiunto il numero uno sulla classifica di iTunes US. The song gained by 8.55 million stream in its first 24 hours on Spotify globally, however, it had the biggest debut week in Spotify with 71.4 million streams in its first week, surpassing American rapper Drake's previous record of 67,5 million streams with his 2018 single, "In My Feelings".

"7 Rings" ha debuttato al numero uno nella US Billboard Hot 100, diventando il secondo singolo numero uno di Ariana, in seguito a "Thank U, Next". With this, Grande became the third female artist to have two or more songs that debuted at number on the Billboard Hot 100, joining Mariah Carey and Britney Spears.

In the United Kingdom, the song debuted at number one with 126,000 combined sales and spots the biggest streaming week in UK history with 16.9 million streams. It also debuted atop of the charts in Australia, Finland, Ireland, New Zealand, Norway, Scotland, Sweden and Switzerland.

The song also debuted at number four in Netherlands and Germany, and at number five in Belgium and Italy.

Il video musicale della canzone è stato diretto da Hannah Lux Davis ed è stato pubblicato insieme alla canzone il 18 gennaio 2019. Quattro giorni prima era stata pubblicata un'anteprima del video della durata di 14 secondi.

Grande's best friends including Alexa Luria, Courtney Chipolone, Victoria Monét, Njomza and Tayla Parx make an appearance in the music video. Appare anche Toulouse.

Billboard ha nominato il video musicale come il quinto migliore tra quelli di Ariana.
