"Breathin" riguarda la respirazione quando sei ansioso. Riguarda l'ansia e la sensazione di non riuscire a respirare a fondo. È come la peggiore sensazione di tutto il mondo. È una canzone su quella sensazione, stavo avendo molti [attacchi d'ansia]. Eravamo in studio, stavamo scrivendo ed ero tipo "Ugh non riesco a respirare". E loro hanno detto "Scriveremo questa canzone". Ed io "Ok, non riesco ancora a respirare, ma la scriveremo".

–  Ariana al The Tonight Show Starring Jimmy Fallon[1]

"Breathin" (reso graficamente in minuscolo) è il terzo e ultimo singolo e nono brano del quarto album in studio di Ariana Grande, Sweetener. È stato pubblicato tramite Republic Records il 18 settembre 2018.[3]

Una versione dal vivo del brano è presente in K Bye For Now (SWT Live), che è stato pubblicato il 23 dicembre 2019.

Panoramica[]

She had to leave the booth to get some air and quiet time.[5]

On August 24, 2018, the audio of "breathin" was uploaded on Grande's YouTube account, which as of March 2019 has over 100 million views. In September 2018, after charting at Top 40 on the US Pop Radio Chart, the song was released as the album's third single impacting US contemporary hit radio on September 18, 2018.[3][6]

Almost a year later on August 30, 2019, Grande tweeted a screen recording of her original Breathin demo, titled 'ball slapper', recorded on February 2, 2018. She tagged Savan Kotecha, who composed the track, and questioned how "#wewonagrammyafterthis????"[7]

Accoglienza commerciale[]

Prior to its release as a single, "Breathin" was one of Ariana Grande's most successful non-singles. When Sweetener came out, the song debuted at No. 4 on the Worldwide iTunes songs chart and peaked at No. 1 on the US iTunes singles chart.[8]

The song debuted at No. 22 on the Billboard Hot 100 and at No. 8 on the ARIA and UK Singles charts, being Grande's first non-single track to reach the Top 10 in the UK and her eighth song overall.[9] The track sold 27,800 digital downloads in its opening week, allowing it to also enter the Digital Songs chart at number four.[10] The following week, "Breathin" dropped fifteen positions to number 37 on the Hot 100[11], but later peaked at number 12 in December.[12] It debuted at No. 1 on the Greece Digital Songs.[13]

"Breathin" also had the 4th biggest debut day by a female artist on Spotify after debuting at No. 3 with 4,082,390 streams on Worldwide Spotify and debuted at No. 4 on Spotify's US Top 50 chart.[14][15]

Video musicale[]

An unofficial music video of the song was uploaded on Grande's Youtube account on October 10, 2018, starring her pet piglet, Piggy Smallz, curiously approaching the camera and walking around on a bed with a plush cover.[16] Shot by Grande, she said she hoped the video would make fans laugh while they await the real music video.[17][18]

The official music video of "Breathin" was directed by Hannah Lux Davis and shot between October, 21 and October, 25 2018.[19][20] It was released on November 7, 2018.[21][22]

The song had its first televised performance live on The Ellen DeGeneres Show on November 7, 2018 where Grande also performed her single "Thank U, Next".[26]

It was a regular part of the setlist of Grande's Sweetener World Tour, which began on March 18, 2019.

[Verso 1]
Some days, things just take way too much of my energy
I look up and the whole room's spinning
You take my cares away
I can so over-complicate, people tell me to medicate

[Pre-ritornello]
Feel my blood runnin', swear the sky's fallin'
I know that all this shit's fabricated, mmm
Time goes by and I can't control my mind
Don't know what else to try, but you tell me every time…

[Ritornello]
Just keep breathin and breathin and breathin and breathin
I know I gotta keep, keep on breathin
Just keep breathin and breathin and breathin and breathin
I know I gotta keep, keep on breathin, mmmm

[Verso 2]
Sometimes it's hard to find, find my way up into the clouds
Tune it out, they can be so loud
You remind me of a time (You remind me of a time) when things weren't so complicated
All I need is to see your face (All I need is to see your face)

[Pre-ritornello]
Feel my blood runnin', swear the sky's fallin'
I know that all this shit's fabricated, mmm
Time goes by and I can't control my mind
Don't know what else to try, but you tell me every time…

[Ritornello]
Just keep breathin and breathin and breathin and breathin
I know I gotta keep, I keep on breathin
Just keep breathin and breathin and breathin and breathin
I know I gotta keep, I keep on breathin, mmmm, yeah

[Bridge]
My, my air
My, my air
My, my air, my air
My, my air
My, my air
My, my air, yeah

[Ritornello]
Just keep breathin and breathin and breathin and breathin (Now)
I know I gotta keep (I know I gotta keep), I keep on breathin (I keep on breathin)
Just keep breathin and breathin and breathin and breathin (Breathin and breathin and breathin and breathin)
I know I gotta keep (Oh, yeah), I keep on breathin, mmmm (Oooh), yeah (Yeah)

[Outro]
Feel my blood runnin' (I feel my blood runnin), swear the sky's fallin' (Ooh, woah, yeah)
I keep on breathin (Oh, yeah)
Time goes by and I can't control my mind (And I can't control my mind, yeah)
I keep on breathin (I keep on breathin), mmm (Ooh), yeah (Yeah)
