Una versione dal vivo della canzone è presente su K Bye For Now (SWT Live), che è stato pubblicato il 23 dicembre 2019.

Il 17 gennaio 2016, Ariana ha twittato dei possibili nuovi testi: "don't need permission, made my decision, to test my limits".[2] Il 1° marzo 2016, Ariana ha pubblicato il primo frammento di "Dangerous Woman" sul suo sito omonimo: si trattava di un clip a cappella. Ha poi condiviso un frammento strumentale della canzone sugli account Snapchat e Instagram con la dicitura "6 giorni fino a Dangerous Woman".
Il 7 marzo 2016, Ariana ha condiviso sul suo Snapchat un frammento della canzone con la didascalia "3". Il 9 marzo 2016, in Victoria's Secret Swim Special è stata presentata un'anteprima della canzone. È stata riprodotta per circa un minuto.
L'11 marzo 2016 la canzone è stata pubblicata come primo singolo dell'album.

Il video musicale è stato girato il 20 marzo 2016. È stato pubblicato il 31 marzo 2016 a mezzanotte su Vevo. Il video è diretto dai The Young Astronauts e prodotto da Peter Williams e Jona Ward. Ariana aveva inizialmente previsto di pubblicare due video musicali, perché la canzone le fa provare due emozioni differenti. Visual 1 doveva essere più lento e sexy, mentre Visual 2 doveva essere più "cinematografico". Ariana ha poi confermato che Visual 2 è stato cancellato.
