Una versione dal vivo dell'intermezzo utilizzando questa canzone è presente in K Bye For Now (SWT Live), che è stato pubblicato il 23 dicembre 2019.

Ariana ha confermato la canzone su Twitter il 13 dicembre 2018.[3]
Quando ad Ariana è stato chiesto di cosa parlasse questa canzone, il 23 gennaio 2019, lei ha risposto che si tratta di "essere innamorati di una versione di qualcuno che hai creato nella tua testa. Innamorarsi di qualcuno per qualcosa che non è".[4]
La canzone contiene un messaggio vocale di uno degli amici più cari di Ariana, Doug Middlebrook, che è stato trovato dopo che la canzone era stata prodotta. Ariana ha detto di averlo usato perché "Doug era un'amica così incredibile per lei in quel momento". Originariamente Grande avrebbe voluto inserire una citazione da The Shining in cui Jack Nicholson dice "Sembri avere cose stranamente confuse nella tua mente",[5] ma non ha potuto per motivi legali.

Nella settimana terminata il 23 febbraio 2019, la canzone ha debuttato al numero 38 della US Billboard Hot 100.[6]

Ci sono due video musicali per "In My Head": il primo è un video musicale di Vogue della canzone che è stato allegato alla pubblicazione di Vogue di agosto 2019. Il video è stato presentato in anteprima sul canale YouTube di Vogue il 9 luglio 2019.[7] È stato diretto da Bardia Zeinali.[8] Nel video musicale, Zeinali "cattura la claustrofobia creativa di essere Ariana Grande".[9]
L'altro video musicale è stato riprodotto tutte le sere al Sweetener World Tour come interludio tra il set 3 e 4. Non è ancora stato pubblicato ufficialmente.
