The song was first mentioned in an interview with Coup De Main Magazine on February 25, 2012. In the interview, Grande was asked if she and 3OH!3 had been working together, to which she responded: "Yeah! I just wrote two songs with them this past weekend, we wrote two songs in like twenty-four hours, they're fantastic".[3]
It was later mentioned again in an interview with Business Insider on August 28, 2023, and the style was said to be very similar to "Put Your Hearts Up", but Sean Foreman could tell that Grande didn't really like it, leading to it being scrapped from the album. It was also confirmed that "Tattooed Heart" was the second song written in that session.
