Music video

"7 Rings" (stylized in all lowercase) is the second single from Ariana Grande's fifth studio album, Thank U, Next. It was released on January 18, 2019, through Republic Records.

Grande described the song as a "friendship anthem" that "evolves" from previous single "Thank U, Next", while embracing a new chapter. She opens up about how her breakup with comedian Pete Davidson led her to treating her friends to a shopping spree where she bought seven matching friendship rings for her and her friends.

Commercially, the song debuted at number one in 15 countries, including the United States, being her second number-one single, following "Thank U, Next", featured on the same album.

A live version of the song is featured on K Bye For Now (SWT Live), which was released on December 23, 2019.

Background

In an interview for Billboard, Grande said: "We needed some retail therapy. You know how when you’re waiting at Tiffany’s they give you lots of champagne? They got us very tipsy, so we bought seven engagement rings, and when I got back to the studio I gave everybody a friendship ring." After that day, Tony Jabaly, who sold the rings to Grande, posted on Instagram a picture with Grande with the caption: "Proud to have made the sale of the 7 Rings", later archived and changed to "It was my pleasure today to work with Ariana Grande. Such a sweetheart person."

Following the release of "Thank U, Next", a supposed track listing of the album was leaked which included "7 Rings". Grande hinted the song several times on her Instagram stories. The instrumental of the song was used in the trailer for the "Thank U, Next" music video. On October 26, 2018, Grande posted on Instagram a picture of her at the Dangerous Woman Tour with the caption: "u like .... my hair? gee thanks... jus bought it". The song was confirmed on December 1, 2018.

On January 3, 2019, Grande confirmed on Twitter that the song would be the second single from Thank U, Next. The song's release date and cover art were revealed on January 10, 2019.

The song samples "My Favorite Things" performed by Julie Andrews from the 1965 film The Sound of Music. It also interpolates The Notorious B.I.G.'s "Gimme The Loot" in the bridge.

A remix with American rapper 2 Chainz was released on February 1, 2019.

Commercial performance

The song debuted at number one on the worldwide iTunes chart following its release. It also debuted at number six and later reached number one on the US iTunes chart. The song gained by 8.55 million stream in its first 24 hours on Spotify globally, however, it had the biggest debut week in Spotify with 71.4 million streams in its first week, surpassing American rapper Drake's previous record of 67,5 million streams with his 2018 single, "In My Feelings".

"7 Rings" debuted at number one in the US Billboard Hot 100 becoming Grande's second number-one single, following "Thank U, Next". With this, Grande became the third female artist to have two or more songs that debuted at number on the Billboard Hot 100, joining Mariah Carey and Britney Spears.

In the United Kingdom, the song debuted at number one with 126,000 combined sales and spots the biggest streaming week in UK history with 16.9 million streams. It also debuted atop of the charts in Australia, Finland, Ireland, New Zealand, Norway, Scotland, Sweden and Switzerland.

The song also debuted at number four in Netherlands and Germany, and at number five in Belgium and Italy.

Music video

The song's music video was directed by Hannah Lux Davis and was released along with song on January 18, 2019. A 14-second teaser of the video was released on January 14, 2019.

Grande's best friends including Alexa Luria, Courtney Chipolone, Victoria Monét, Njomza and Tayla Parx make an appearance in the music video. Toulouse also appears.

Billboard named the music video as Grande's fifth best.

The behind-the-scenes video was uploaded on February 5, 2019.

Live performances

Grande debuted the song live on her Sweetener World Tour, which began on March 18, 2019.
