Even at my most heartbroken, most pained moments of the last few years, there was so much kindness. There was so much love, there was so much honesty, and transparency, and respect. So even at the hardest moments, of [...] the loss and the grief that you hear on some of the album, some of the heartbreak stuff, there was so much love and transparency. That was something I really wanted to make sure was caputured; it wasn't like a "fuck you" at all, and ever. Even [on Bye], I tried to make sure it was kind and giving credit for trying, and for the goodness that there was.

–Ariana Grande on "Bye" and "Eternal Sunshine" from the Zach Sang Show[1]

"Bye" (stylized in all lowercase) is the second track on Ariana Grande’s seventh studio album, Eternal Sunshine. It was released on March 8, 2024, through Republic Records.

Background[]

On February 7, 2024, Grande posted an Instagram story, revealing three more song titles. These song titles included: "Bye", "Supernatural", and "We Can't Be Friends (Wait For Your Love)".[2] During the first part of the Zach Sang Show interview for Eternal Sunshine, which premiered on February 26, 2024, she hinted that it was about her relationship and divorce from ex-husband Dalton Gomez.[1]

Grande stated in her interview with Zach Sang that Don't Wanna Break Up Again is the hangover of this song.[3] She mentions saying "At least we know we tried, didn't we? The two of us, we did good" in this song, and saying "Well, you didn't even try till the end!" in Don't Wanna Break Up Again.[3] She also mentioned in the interview that there a few of alternate versions of this song with different lyrics made before the final released version. She stated, "Yeah, I think "Bye" I wrote on a day when I was very upset and emotional, so it was a little bit more reactive and it just wasn't representative of like how I actually feel. So I like filtered it through and I combed through a bunch of times and it was important to me to make sure that it wasn't just like that for that exact reason."[3]

Trivia[]

  • The song debuted at No. 63 on Apple Music US.
  • Grande revealed that this song was the hardest one to write on this album.[3]
  • This is one of Joan Grande's favorite songs from the album. In an interview with Zach Sang, Grande mentions writing this song from her mother's perspective. Noting how coming from a broken home herself, she ended up craving a fairy-tail-like love, clinging to that hope and ignoring her partner's red flags. Grande also described how her mother is an honest example of not doing so. “I think growing up you want what you don’t have, like, my parents got divorced for all the right reasons, they weren’t supposed to be together. And you kinda crave, when you grow up, the happily ever after, the one is the one is the one, so, you ignore all these issues and you cling on to that fairytale, you get self abandoned. And I think my mom is a fierce example of not doing that.[3]
  • In the pre-chorus, Ariana mentions her longtime close friend Courtney Chipolone, who just came to pick her up. Grande is touching on the experience of trusting and leaning on friends during a breakup and hardship.
  • It's the only song on Eternal Sunshine to feature Ariana's famous "yuh" ad-lib.
  • An orchestral background of the bridge apparently interpolates the "Wicked" Original Broadway Cast Recording/2003, especially "Dear Old Shiz".[4][5]

Lyrics[]

[Intro]
Bye-bye
Boy, bye
Bye-bye
Boy, bye
It's over, it's over, oh yeah

[Verse 1]
This ain't the first time I've been hostage to these tears
I can't believe I'm finally moving through my fears
At least I know how hard we tried, both you and me
Didn't we? Didn't we?

[Pre-Chorus]
So I grab my stuff
Courtney just pulled up in the driveway
It's time

[Chorus]
Bye-bye
Boy, bye
Bye-bye
It's over, it's over, oh yeah
Bye-bye
I'm taking what's mine, yeah
Bye-bye
It's over, it's over, oh yeah

[Verse 2]
You know?
I'm stronger than I think
Usually, I'd join you on the floor
But this dance ain't for me
Boy, just turn the music up
Maybe someday we'll look back with love
Didn't think you'd lose me
Now it's just too late to choose me

[Pre-Chorus]
So I grab my stuff (Ooh)
Courtney just pulled up in the driveway
It's time (It's time)

[Chorus]
Bye-bye
Boy, bye (Boy, bye)
Bye-bye
It's over, it's over, oh yeah
Bye-bye
I'm taking what's mine, yeah (What's mine)
Bye-bye
It's over, it's over, oh yeah

[Bridge]
Now it's certainly bittersweet
This hook feels too hard to sing
But it's better than repeat (Than repeat, than repeat, than repeat)

[Chorus]
Bye-bye
Boy, bye (Boy, bye)
Bye-bye
It's over, it's over, oh, yeah (Bye)
Bye-bye (Bye-bye)
I'm taking what's mine, yeah (Ooh)
Bye-bye
It's over, it's over, oh, yeah (Ooh)
Bye-bye (Boy, bye)
I'm taking what's mine, yeah (I'm taking what's mine, yeah)
Bye-bye
It's over, it's over, oh, yeah
