“ | Cat is fun-loving, free spirited, eccentric and highly emotional. She lives in her own world which she's created in her head and is always distracted by it. I love her! | ” |
–Ariana describing Cat[1] |
Catarina "Cat" Valentine is one of the main characters in the Nickelodeon sitcom Victorious and a lead character in Sam & Cat. Cat is portrayed by Ariana Grande.
Biography[]
Cat is one of Tori's strangest friends from Hollywood Arts High School. She is fun and energetic and sometimes oblivious. As seen in some episodes, she is revealed to be somewhat smart, but this is frequently overshadowed by her airy and ditzy way of talking. In a video on TheSlap she reveals that her full name is Catarina but only her grandmother calls her by her full name.[2] She is relatively friendly and liked by all the students. She is sweet, naive, bubbly and happy, often unsuspecting of what is really going on around her. She has a playful nature and has a very short attention span, so she can easily be distracted with colorful items by the others when they want her out of the way. She can be somewhat of a drama queen and doesn't take criticism very well. She often screams "What's that supposed to mean!?" when offended, which is very often and has become her catchphrase during season 1 of the show.[3] Cat often says random and strange things which leaves the others, especially Jade, confused or even annoyed.
Cat is also an extremely talented singer and actress, as seen in "Freak the Freak Out" where she sings a duet with Jade, and in the crossover episode "iParty with Victorious" with iCarly. where she shows a high vocal range. A running gag of the series is Cat often telling her friends or strangers about her brother, who seems to have many unnatural problems, all of which Cat doesn't seem to find strange or abnormal. She has bright red hair that she dyed after being hit in the head by her brother with an object, when she liked the blood color on her hair. André has a nickname for her: "Little Red", which she took offence to at first, but then decided to like it and called it "creative". It is revealed in "The Breakfast Bunch" episode that she is a vegan.
Personality[]
Cat is an extremely sweet, ditzy, adorable, and caring girl with a strange fear of clouds. She acts very happy-go-lucky, very bubbly, and at times a bit crazy, and usually speaks in a ditzy tone of voice which causes people to not realize her intellect. She often unknowingly gets herself into sticky situations.[4] Ariana Grande describes Cat as "loving, friendly, and fun." After it was announced that Sam & Cat would be cancelled, Grande wrote a TwitLonger about how much she loves Cat stating that "she wouldn't judge anybody by their appearance.... she believed the best in people.... she wasn't afraid of anything or anybody.... she never let people's judgments hold her back from doing what she wanted, acting how she wanted, dressing how she wanted, dying her hair however she wanted... she never held back her enthusiasm or joy for fear of appearing some sort of way or for fear of jinxing the good that is real."
Relationships with other characters[]
Victorious[]
Tori Vega (portrayed by Victoria Justice)[]
Tori and Cat are great friends, and Cat is the first girl to ever meet Tori, though she runs away shortly after meeting her. Cat showed signs of worrying about Tori when Jade spilled coffee on her. On TheSlap, Cat posted a picture of Tori named 'My BFF Tori' in her picture category Cat's Day at the Beach and captioned it saying "Tori was so excited to see me, she put her unusually long arm up in the air. LOL. JK, Tori." Cat has also slept over at Tori's house and has hugged her there in a TheSlap video. Tori is also the only person that Cat has punched in the show.
André Harris (portrayed by Leon Thomas III)[]
André seems to be good friends with Cat. He is very nice to her and takes up for her if the others don't seem to want to. He calls her "little red" because of her red hair which seems to really amuse her. In "Survival of the Hottest", when she finally gets them out of the RV, André picks her up excitedly. Also, the two are seen in a video on TheSlap where Sikowitz ambushes them at lunch with a Drive-by Acting Exercise. The two are also seen to be hanging out with Tori the most in the show.
Robbie Shapiro (portrayed by Matt Bennett)[]
Cat and Robbie seem to be close friends. Although, Rex, Robbie's ventriloquist dummy, doesn't seem to like her, which causes constant apologies from Robbie. In fact, Cat seems to be the only girl that Rex has yet to have hit on. In the episode "Stage Fighting", she tried to prove to Robbie his stage kiss with Trina was only acting. When he doesn't believe her, she stage-kisses him, and he asks her to meet his parents. In "Wi-Fi In The Sky", Robbie was the first one she told her joke to. Throughout the series when she gets mad at him, she gets over it quickly. In "The Birthweek Song", she goes with Robbie to his Grandma's house, and in Prom Wrecker, Robbie asks her to the prom. It is shown throughout the series that Robbie and Cat might have feelings for each other.
Jade West (portrayed by Liz Gillies)[]
Cat and Jade are best friends. Jade is kinder towards Cat. In "Freak the Freak Out", they sang the song "Give It Up" together. They were also seen dancing very closely to one another (with nearly the exact same choreography) while singing.
Beck Oliver (portrayed by Avan Jogia)[]
Even though they are quite opposite, Cat seems to be somewhat close to Beck. They've never shown if they dislike each other for any reason. In the episode "Robarazzi", Cat grabs Beck to show him the new device she got from the Sky Store, and he didn't mind it too much. In "Survival of the Hottest", after Cat opens the RV, Beck gives her a small kiss on the head. In "Wi-Fi in the Sky", Beck copies Cat when he makes himself spin in the effects on a video chat. Also, on TheSlap.com Cat said Beck has great hair, and they are best friends. Beck kisses Cat for the movie Tori directs. Also, because she and Cat are best friends, Beck's girlfriend, Jade, has never once shown any signs of jealousy when Beck and Cat are shown together.
Trina Vega (portrayed by Daniella Monet)[]
Trina and Cat never really knew each other until "Tori the Zombie", when Cat applies a glue to Tori's face. Cat and Trina have to drive to the company to buy the solvent for removal. They sing a song "Five Fingas to the Face", but Cat skips a line because it is vulgar. They go to Freezy Queen to get ice cream, causing them to arrive late to Tori's show. They are considered friends. Trina even asked for her phone number in "Survival of the Hottest" to call her when she left to go use the bathroom and hugs her when she gets them out, a hint that she cares for her.
Erwin Sikowitz (portrayed by Eric Lange)[]
Sikowitz is Cat's acting teacher. In "The Bird Scene", Sikowitz hit Cat in the face with a ball for an acting challenge. Then, Cat comes back to ask a question, and he hits her again, saying (to Tori), "We'll never know her question." Sikowitz seems to dislike Cat, in a way that she annoys him. Cat supports Sikowitz when he is singing "Number One" at Karaoke Dokie. Later, in "The Diddly Bops", Sikowitz is very happy that Rex tells Cat to shut up after singing about the Wagafuffles. In Cat's costume design class she makes a costume to look like Sikowitz. In her costume when she sees him she imitates him.
Sam & Cat[]
Sam Puckett (portrayed by Jennette McCurdy)[]
Cat and Sam become roommates in the pilot episode and create a babysitting business to fund their adventures. After they first met, they quickly became friends and soon best friends and roommates. Cat cares about what happens to Sam and brings out the best in her, and together, the two are able to get through almost anything. They care and protect each other. Despite being polar opposites, they are quite synchronised with each other, knew well. Cat is the only best friend that Sam have a soft spot on. They get along really well and will do anything for each other.
Dice Corleone (portrayed by Cameron Ocasio)[]
Dice is good friends with Cat. They have been neighbors since Cat moved in to live with her Nona. Cat comfortably lets Dice walk into her apartment, showing how close their friendship is. However, Dice's problems sometimes irritate her. Like his friendship with Sam, Cat can be mean to him sometimes. Like, in Lumpatious she mocked him and angrily talked to him about kids starving when he complained about his noodles being to long. Also, like in DroneBabyDrone, she said she would punch Dice in the face if Newsnewsnewsnews.com wasn't interesting.
Nona (portrayed by Maree Cheatham)[]
Nona is Cat's grandmother. Cat and Nona have a good relationship. Cat also wanted Nona to stay with her instead of going to the retirement home.
Goomer (portrayed by Zoran Korach)[]
Goomer and Cat are friends. They are the two most dimwitted characters and the silliest, so they get along rather well.
