"Confused" (stylized in all lowercase) is an unreleased song by Ariana Grande that was intended for her fifth studio album, Thank U, Next.

Background

Grande first teased the song on social media, tagging Kaydence along with several of her other friends and producers in an early track-list for the album that had nine blacked out tracks written out on a white board on her Instagram on October 2, 2018.

The first snippet of the song leaked in 2020. The song originally leaked on August 15, 2021, but it was later confirmed that the file was edited. The person who was selling the song edited it so they could scam others into buying the song. The seller who leaked it replaced the first part of the second verse with the first part of the first verse. The song was leaked with the original verse August 24, 2021.

Version 5 was leaked on December 25, 2023, alongside "Wit It This Christmas (Demo)", "Lakortle" "34+35 (Ariana New Solo) and "Safety Net (Demo)".

A EDM mix of the song leaked December 31, 2023. The demo is shorter with a different instrumental, with the original file name being "confusion_tone".

The full session leaked on January 4, 2024, along with several other unreleased songs and sessions.

• The instrumental is used in "Dumb Thingz" by Kaydence and Timbaland so it's speculated that Kaydence had some part in producing the instrumental and had Grande do a demo of the song.
  • In the session, you can find an early unused version of the instrumental for "Dumb Thingz", even having the song's title.
• The song references the original scrapped version of "My Hair" that was cut from the Thank U, Next album.
• This song was recorded and worked on during several different studio sessions, along side "Needy", "Thank U, Next", "Imagine", "Not Ok", "Indica", "In The Moment", and "My Hair".
• The background vocal effects in version six were reused in version seven.
• The line "I’m elevated, on a fucking elevator all the way up to my spaceship, on the fly, I’ll see you later, later" is a reference to how Grande was constantly flying from place to place, especially during tour, so the spaceship she alludes to could be a reference to the planes.
  • Grande also jokingly talked about flying to space on the "thank u, next" interview with Zach Sang and said she would love to go, even if it meant never coming back to Earth.
