Stage design
  +
In the Dangerous Woman Diaries series, Grande explained that the stage design she chose for the tour was like a blank canvas as the stage is entirely white. In fact, the stage is very different from the one featured in the Honeymoon Tour. Instead of using a traditional LED panel rectangular screen, Grande went with a different technology. The "screen" was in an inverted triangle shape, the shape of the screen varied following the size of the venue. A technology of projection was used and the screen was made of thousands of small strings, forming a curtain-like effect.
In her interview with Ryan Seacrest, Grande said that she would perform every song from Dangerous Woman. She said she would also sing some old songs as well as covers. She also expressed her desire to perform "Focus" (although she did end up doing this) and to extend "Knew Better" for the tour. She expressed wanting to use the Mi.Mu Gloves on the tour originally but eventually decided not to use them on tour.

This permitted to have a less aggressive lighting coming from the screen and more options for the visuals. There was also a long T-shaped catwalk with pointy edges. The stage was equipped of several lifts on which the dancers and grande herself performed several songs such as "Bad Decisions", "Side to Side" and "Knew Better/Forever Boy". For the other legs, the lifts were switched to movable stairs. During "Greedy", custom-made dollar bills confettis were thrown. The show also featured smoke and fire effects from the stage. The band performed behind the main screen at the beginning of the show and appeared on stage during the "Leave Me Lonely Interlude" on moving platforms.

The Dangerous Woman Tour (abbreviated as "DWT") was Ariana Grande's third concert tour in support of her third studio album Dangerous Woman, which was released on May 20, 2016. The tour began on February 3, 2017 in Phoenix, Arizona, and concluded on September 21, 2017 in Hong Kong, China. The tour was sponsored by Burger King and Bkstg.

Grande worked with her photographer and friend Alfredo Flores and created a YouTube Originals docu-series titled The Dangerous Woman Diaries that was released on November 29, 2018 which acts as the concert film for the Dangerous Woman Tour and contains behind the scenes footage of the Dangerous Woman Tour and the making of her fourth studio album, Sweetener.

Background

On July 7, 2016, Grande replied to a Twitter post that she's working on the tour dates.[1] On July 31, Grande replied to a Twitter post that she will likely announce the tour dates at the end of August.[2] The two opening acts were announced to be Little Mix and Victoria Monét.

The DW Tour Instagram account was created at the end of October 2016 to document the tour. Rehearsals fully began after the completion of Hairspray Live! in December and throughout January. Grande worked with Alfredo Flores, Hannah Lux Davis, and Jones Crow to create visuals for the tour.[3][4][5]

On February 27, 2017, Live Nation announced that BIA will be joining the tour as the opening act for the UK dates during the European leg of the tour. She is also opening in Scandinavia and Amsterdam.[6]

Trivia

 • Toulouse and Pignoli accompanied Grande on the tour.
 • Grande wore many different hairstyles throughout the tour, as opposed to exclusively wearing her signature high pony. On select shows, she would wear her hair down, sometimes with mini space buns. During the show in Tulsa, she wore her bangs instead of clipping them back.
 • When the first leg of the tour commenced, Grande expressed her gratitude to her fans on Instagram, leading to #ThankYouAriana to trend on Twitter the next day.[7]
 • At select shows, Mac Miller performed "The Way" with Grande on stage during the interchangeable slot. He would also join her to perform "Dang!" on June 7, 2017.
 • This is Grande's shortest arena tour, lasting seven months and 18 days
 • Hannah Lux Davis directed all of the visuals used for the tour.
 • On September 17, Lady Cultura, one of Grande's backup dancers, was fired after using a racial slur on her Instagram story.[8]

Stage design

In the Dangerous Woman Diaries series, Grande explained that the stage design she chose for the tour was like a blank canvas as the stage is entirely white. In fact, the stage is very different from the one featured in the Honeymoon Tour. Instead of using a traditional LED panel rectangular screen, Grande went with a different technology. The "screen" was in an inverted triangle shape, the shape of the screen varied following the size of the venue. A technology of projection was used and the screen was made of thousands of small strings, forming a curtain-like effect.
