[The songs] were all written for a TV show, for something that was not for me. So, "Fantasize" 'comes out' - crazy - was stolen [...] That wasn't my song. It wasn't for me; it was like a parody of a 90's girl group vibe but they loved it, they loved it so much. And I was like 'a) all of you are absolutely hypocrites and b) that's crazy! It's so corny!' But it's okay, I took the note.

–Grande about the leaks of the song. [1]

"Fantasize" (originally titled "Just Ain't Me")[2] is an unreleased song by Ariana Grande recorded in August of 2021, intended for the scrapped Seth MacFarlane Show. Grande then recorded "The Boy Is Mine" in light of it for her seventh studio album, Eternal Sunshine.

Background[]

The first snippet was leaked on June 21, 2023, and was titled “ARIANA 7” by the seller, alongside the first snippet of "True Story". A second snippet leaked on June 25, 2023. The full song and the session leaked the same day on June 25, 2023, alongside another unreleased song titled "Gloss".

Ariana had commented on a TikTok video about the song and said: "wrote this for a comedy sketch about a girl group. this was the demo i made for them. please stop spreading leaks. i appreciate it", but the comment and post has been deleted.[3]

When talking about "True Story" in her interview with Zach Sang, Grande mentioned this song, and said "Yeah, I actually had that hook from the batch of songs that Max and I were working on for the Seth MacFarlane TV show that never happened. So that was like a sister song to "Fantasize". A couple of these little seedlings existed before this album and I actually, in the moment, was like 'We might have to save some of these for when we do an album'. So that was something that I, even though there is a version of it out there already on TikTok, I was like it feels so important, I love it that much that I kind of want to reclaim it and make out of it what I wanted to originally. I didn't want to like, let them win in that way, I guess."

Popularity[]

The song went viral on TikTok in mid 2023. Several videos using the sound earned over 100K likes and 1M views each. It was also featured in 3K or more videos in 24 hours.[4] The song has been Shazamed over 1M times and featured in 600k TikTok videos. This song has been searched up over 14.4k times by many fans.[5]

An unofficial upload of the song (titled "BUT JUST BEFORE I GO, THERE'S SOMETHING YOU SHOULD KNOW", a line from the pre-chorus) had received a very big streaming day on Spotify, with 29,810 streams[6], but it was removed from Spotify after entering the Spotify Philippines chart at #200. This has been the first and only unreleased song by any artist that has charted in any country[7]. Also, the person who uploaded the song under the name "Adriana Venti" on Spotify, was allegedly fined up to $10k and ordered to do over 48 hours of community service.[8]

The song was a trending search on Apple Music under the "Fantasize" topic.[9]

The song debuted at #25 on today’s Global Genius Chart with over 41k page views[10], it then climbed to #23 (+2) with 49K page views[11], and peaked at #13, with 55.5K cumulative pageviews.[12] The track was removed from Genius for a short amount of time following a recent surge of interest on TikTok.[13]

Trivia[]

  • This song was not intended for any album.
  • Following fans' positive reception to the song, Grande was inspired to incorporate elements of the song into "The Boy Is Mine".
  • The song had also illegally been played on radio stations and at markets even though it's not released.[14]
  • This song samples the drums from Fugees and Lauryn Hill's "Killing Me Softly With His Song".[15]
    • This song may have also sampled other songs like one of Britney Spears songs, "Baby One More Time", "Oops! …I Did It again", or Brandy & Monica's "The Boy Is Mine" (which Grande also sampled in her own song of the same name).
  • Demo 1 has a few melodic changes in it.
  • Demo 2 has Savan Kotecha singing some of the chorus and added background vocals.

  • The files names had "90’s idea number 3 2.1" confirming that this track was going for a 90’s, R&B/Hip-hop type of flow.

  • Many people commonly mistake the song for being about Ethan Slater, but it was made back in 2021, before the two had even dated.
  • Grande described this song as the sister song to "True Story" when being interviewed by Zach Sang.[16]

Lyrics[]

[Intro]
Ooh-ooh
Ooh-ooh, oh

[Verse 1]
A few weeks ago
I saw you front row
And my heart stopped at the sight (Ooh, yeah)
Thought you were solo (Thought you were solo)
But you got a girl though (But you got a girl though)
And my life ain't been the same
Been feelin’

[Pre-Chorus]
Mentally, physically weak
Boys blowin' up my phone
They just ain't you, oh, baby
I'm meant to be on my own
But just before I go
There's something you should know
And boy, I

[Chorus]
I fantasize about it all the time
If you were mine
I'd give this pussy to you, nine-to-five, five-to-nine
Try to behave, but I'm feelin' some type of (way) way
That just ain't me

[Verse 2]
A few months latеr
You're still together (Ooh, no)
And you just can't tell me why, Why
So boy stop pretendin', (Yeah)
'Cause I won't keep waitin'
I'm out the door, bye, bye, bye (I’m totally leaving right now)
Been feelin'

[Pre-Chorus]
Mentally, physically weak (Weak)
Boys blowin' up my phone (My phone)
They just ain't you (You), oh baby
I'm meant to be on my own (I'd rather be, on my own)
But just before I go (Before I go)
There's something you should know (Should know)
And boy, I

[Chorus]
I fantasize about it all the time
If you were mine (If you were mine, baby)
I'd give this pussy to you, nine-to-five, five-to-nine
Try to behave, but I'm feelin' some type of (Way) way
That just ain't me

[Post-Chorus]
I could never do anything like that
I mean I would, but, I'm just too nice, I'm too hot

[Bridge]
Mentally, physically weak
Boys blowin' up my phone
They just ain't you, ooh,
Baby

[Chorus]
I fantasize about it all the time
If you were mine (If you were mine, baby)
I'd give this pussy to you, nine-to-five, five-to-nine
Try to behave, but I'm feelin' some type of (Way) way
That just ain't me

[Post-Chorus]
(Haha, ha)
That just ain’t me, baby,
Tryna behave
Try to behave, but I'm feelin' some type of (Some type of way) way
That just ain't me
