"Female" is an interlude for and used in Ariana Grande's Dangerous Woman Tour.

Background Edit

Directed by Hannah Lux Davis, the interlude played between Set 2 and 3 of Grande's Dangerous Woman Tour. The year prior, Grande had stated her opinion on "expressing sexuality in art", stating that:

[it] is not an invitation for disrespect !!! just like wearing a short skirt is not asking for assault.[1]

It was only until two years later, on International Women's Day 2019 that Grande and Davis decided to release the original video online. Grande posted the interlude to Twitter on March 8, 2019, reading:

we made this for the dwt and you’ve been asking for it since 🖤 happy international women’s day every day to women of every color, shape, size, sexuality, age, religion, trans, cis, and all who identify ! u are everything and i’m proud of u everyday. female by @HANNAHLUXDAVIS 🌫[2]

Content Edit

As aforementioned, the interlude was integrated with messages of feminism and empowerment, expressing the variety of things a woman can be. "Not asking for it" was repeated throughout, with implications of bodily freedom and how no one "asks" for sexual assault. Grande even spoke on this to her fans on Twitter:

wearing a short skirt is not asking for assault.[3]
