It's about my anxiety. I felt like I was floating for like 3 months last year and not in a nice way. Like I outside my body? It was very scary and I couldn't breathe well. So it's about that. And lots of voices in my head singing. I hope it comforts people who hear it.

–Ariana about the song.[1]

"Get Well Soon" (stylized in all lowercase, orignally "Feel It") is the fifteenth and final track from Ariana Grande's fourth studio album, Sweetener.[3][4] It was released on August 17, 2018, through Republic Records. The track is 5 minutes and 22 seconds long and features 40 seconds of silence at the end of the track, paying respect to victims of the Manchester bombing attack of the May 22nd, 2017.[5][3] A live version of the song is featured on K Bye For Now (SWT Live), which was released on December 23, 2019.

Background

The song was first teased on December 31, 2017, on Grande's Instagram.[2]She confirmed that the snippet played is from the song on May 29, 2018.[6]

Grande soon revealed more about the song on May 17, 2018, during her interview for TIME Magazine's 'Next Generation Leaders'. The track is described as her vocals are interwoven in dense layers of sound, creating an otherworldly effect.[3] On May 18, 2018, she teased the name of the song on her Twitter.[7]

Two weeks later on May 29, 2018, Grande replied to a fan on Twitter and said that the song is about her anxiety: "i felt like i was floating for like 3 months last year & not in a nice way. Like I [am] outside my body? [It] was very scary and i couldn't breathe well. So it’s about that & lots of voices in my head singin’. I hope it comforts ppl who hear it pls ☁️".[8]

Three days later on June 1, 2018, Grande confirmed while replying to more fans on Twitter that "Get Well Soon" is the fifteenth track from the album and that it was the longest track on the album.[4]

On July 3, 2018, Grande posted a screenshot of her listening to the song on her Instagram story, confirming that the song's length was 5:22.[1]

On July 8, 2018, Pharrell Williams posted a snippet of him singing the song on his Instagram story.[2] That same day, Grande posted a 40-second snippet of the song onto her social media.[3]

When the album was officially released, Grande posted a video onto her Instagram, her and her Nonna dancing to the song on August 17, 2018.[4]

On August 19, 2018, Grande posted a snippet of a visual for the song on her Instagram.[9]The second snippet of the visual for "Get Well Soon" was leaked online 6 years later on June 14, 2023, along with 2 other visuals that were "R.E.M." and "Sweetener". The full visual leaked a couple days later on June 18, 2023, along with the other two visuals leaking the same day, and all three visuals leaked in full.

Critical reception

Pitchfork editor Jillian Mapes called "Get Well Soon" a "career-defining moment" and praised it as "the sort of freeform, self-help soul ballad you'd maybe expect to round out a Beyoncé opus" and wrote: "Anyone who knows how gracefully Grande handled the horrific events at her Manchester show last year will recognize an equally graceful response to her own emotional aftermath in this song."[10] The Independent's Kate Solomon called the track ambitious and said: "As a five-minute musical interpretation of the post-traumatic panic attacks Grande has suffered, 'Get Well Soon' is not exactly enjoyable to listen to but admirable in its honesty."[11]

Paper magazine's list "Top 100 Songs of 2018" placed "Get Well Soon" at #15: "Ariana Grande did something she didn't have to, and transformed her pain into something digestible, like sweetener molecules settling into a bitter cup of coffee; Sweetener's legacy will be its resoundingly positive message about true love's grace."[12]

Live performances

Grande debuted "Get Well Soon" live on August 20, 2018, at The Sweetener Sessions. On May 14, 2019, the song was added to the Sweetener World Tour setlist, replacing "Goodnight N Go". However, on August 17, 2019, the song was removed and replaced by "Only 1".

Lyrics

[Intro]
You can feel it, feel it

[Verse 1]
(Yeah, yeah)
They say my system is overloaded
(Girl, what's wrong with you? Come back down)
I'm too much in my head, did you notice, mmm?
(Girl, what's wrong with you? Come back down)
My body's here on Earth, but I'm floating
(Girl, what's wrong with you? Come back down)
(Oh, woah) Disconnected, so sometimes, I feel frozen and alone (And alone)

[Chorus]
This is for everybody
Babe, you gotta take care of your body (Yuh, yuh, yuh)
Ain't no time to deny it (Yuh)
That is why we talking about it
Yeah, we talking about it
Deal with it to try and get by it
Ain't no time to deny it
So we had to stand and just write it

[Verse 2]
(Want you to get better, woo)
My life is so controlled by the what if's
(Girl, what's wrong with you? Come back down)
Is there anybody else who's mind does this, mmm?
(Girl, what's wrong with you? Come back down)
(Down, down, down, down, down)
Is there such a ladder to talk about this?
(Girl, what's wrong with you? Come back down)
Maybe I should ground myself where the mud is, before I'm gone (Before I'm gone)

[Chorus]
This is for everybody (Yee)
Babe, you gotta take care of your body (Yuh, yuh, yuh) (Oh, woah)
Ain't no time to deny it (Yuh) (Oh, yeah)
That is why we talking about it (Baby)
Yeah, we talking about it
Deal with it to try and get by it (Oooh)
Ain't no time to deny it (Hey)
So we had to stand and just ride it

[Refrain]
You can work your way to the top
(You can feel it, feel it, woo)
(Oh, boy)
Just know that there's up and downs and there's drops
(You can feel it, feel it, woo)
(Oh, babe)
Unfollow fear and just say "You are blocked"
(You can feel it, feel it)
Yuh
Just know there is so much room at the top
(You can feel it, feel it)
Yee
