It was a very exciting thing for me to all of a sudden have this new mission, to make something as special as Yours Truly, and to put my time and effort into something new and something I want to make just as good, if not better.

Background

Following the release of Grande's debut studio album Yours Truly in September 2013 which was met with positive reviews, Grande announced in October 2013 that she had already begun writing and working on her second studio album with previous producers from her debut album, including Harmony Samuels, Babyface, The Rascals and Tommy Brown. She had a meeting with Republic Records to discuss the album in October 2013.[8] Grande was initially aiming at releasing the album around February 2014. In January 2014, recording sessions for the album had officially began and Grande confirmed she has been in the studio with new producers Ryan Tedder, Savan Kotecha, Key Wayne, Benny Blanco and Max Martin.

It was announced on March 3, 2014 that Grande would be featured on the fifth single from Chris Brown's upcoming sixth studio album X titled "Don't Be Gone Too Long". The single was originally set for release on March 25, 2014, however was postponed due to Brown being sent to jail awaiting trail on assault charges. Grande had announced the songs delay on March 17, 2014 via twitter stating "My loves… so obviously some things have changed recently... So we have to delay the dbgtl countdown, some things are out of our control". That same night she held a live stream to make up for the singles delay, where she previewed four new songs from her second album including "My Everything", "They Don't Understand", and "Only One". Two days later following the announcement Grande revealed due the songs delay, she would be releasing the first single from her upcoming sophomore studio album instead. After recording multiple songs for the album, Grande stated that she had chosen the first single from her album. On April 15, 2014, it was officially announced that "Problem" would be the title of the lead single from the album. Grande then began an online countdown to the release of the song and later revealed that Australian rapper Iggy Azalea would accompany her on the track. The song premiered at the the 2014 Radio Disney Music Awards and was put on iTunes later that night. "Problem" was very successful, landing in the top ten of many countries including the United States where it debuted at #3 on the Billboard Hot 100 and peaked at #2.

Composition

Ariana will experiment with new sounds for this album. In an interview with Rolling Stone, she says, "It’s an album that I want to do a little bit different. I don’t want it to sound like an extension of Yours Truly. I want it to sound like an evolution. I want to explore more sounds and experiment a little bit. I have a bunch of ideas I’m very excited about and a lot of stuff."
