"My Hair" (stylized in all lowercase) is the eighth track from Ariana Grande's sixth studio album, Positions. It was released on October 30, 2020 through Republic Records. On October 24, 2020, Grande confirmed the song as the eighth track on Positions.[2] The song was originally meant to appear on her fifth studio album, Thank U, Next, but was ultimately removed.

Background[]

As stated in this song "My Hair", Grande lets her hair down, literally, as she gets intimate with her lover. Permitting her partner to touch her hair, as it puts her in an honest and vulnerable position, but here, she’s comfortable and willing enough to do it.

In her interview with Zach Sang, Grande states how her hair is a part of her identity and journey through chapters of her life, as well as how her ex husband, Dalton, appreciates her natural curly hair.

A part of the 2018 sessions leaked November 27, 2023. The full session leaked December 25, 2023.

Critical Reception[]

According to Time magazine, Maura Johnston, describes the track as "bringing R&B ideals from the past right into the present. "my hair" is a 2020 reinvention of a old-school soul that flips its first verse from a double entendre into an invitation for someone to run their fingers through her tresses.

Grande’s whistle range acts as a counterpoint to her understated flirtation, floating above the song’s flinty guitar lines as she starts to reveal a new part of herself to a new person." [3]

Trivia[]

  • This is Grande's most difficult song to sing live.
  • One of Ariana’s most notable features is her signature high ponytail, and here, Grande is embracing her natural curls and opening up an insecure part of herself to someone she loves.
  • This song was originally intended for Thank U, Next, and was first recorded in October 2018, with the rest of the songs from the album, but it was ultimately scrapped until she decided to re-record the song for the Positions album.
    • Grande actually hinted at this in the music video countdown for the "34+35" remix when she said it had been written in an older era.[4]
  • During the 34+35 remix premiere, Grande said that she would’ve replaced this song with "Main Thing" for the original track-list only because my hair was an older song and she would’ve rather replace it with a song that was written during the current time. However, she loved how the track-list ended up, and said that she wouldn’t change a thing.
  • She has said that she recorded the whistle tones for the final version after singing in the shower and noticing how they were especially great that day.

Chart performance[]

"My Hair" debuted at #65 on the Billboard Hot 100 during the chart week of November 14, 2020.[5]

Live performances[]

A live performance of the song was released on July 14, 2021. It is a Vevo Original Live.[6]

Lyrics[]

[Verse 1]
Said I'm gon' give you some instructions
That you can't be scared to try
I want you to touch it softly
Like the way you do my mind
I got body and it's smooth to touch
The same way as my skin
But don't you be scared

[Chorus]
To run your hands through my hair
Baby, 'cause that why it's there
Come run your hands through my hair
Oh, baby, said don't you be scared
So come run your hands through my hair

[Verse 2]
It's been way long overdue
Just like these inches down my back
Usually don't let people touch it
But tonight, you'll get a pass
Spend my dimes and spend my time
To keep it real, sometimes it's tracks
But I don't care, mmm

[Chorus]
So run your hands through my hair
Baby, 'cause that why it's there
Come run your hands through my hair
Oh, baby, said don't you be scared
So come run your hands through my hair

[Bridge]
Know this ain't usually mе
But I might let it down for ya (Mmm)
This ain't usually me (Usually me)
But I might lеt it down for ya

[Chorus]
So run your hands through my hair
Baby, 'cause that why it's there
So come run your hands through my hair
Oh, don't you be scared
Come run your hands through my hair

[Outro]
Oh-oh, oh-oh
Oh-oh, oh-oh
