The reason why I liked it, it’s an all-encompassing, like, ‘What the fuck?' [...] Why aren’t we all thinking with the cap of, "Everyone’s tired, everyone is healing from someone or something you can’t see on the surface." That’s why I kind of liked [‘Yes, And?’] as a, "We’re coming back."

–Grande on Instagram [1]

"Yes, And?" (stylized in all lowercase) is a song by Ariana Grande, that served as the first lead single and ninth track from her seventh studio album, Eternal Sunshine.[2] It was released through Republic Records on January 12, 2024. Two days later on January 16, 2024, a Yes, And? EP was released featuring various versions of the song to boost more sales. On February 20, 2024, three surprise remixes featuring Felix Jaehn, Jonas Blue, and The Blessed Madonna were released.

Background[]

On August 28, 2023, Grande teased the song for the first time in a Yours Truly 10th anniversary Q&A video by saying "[...] say it with my chest", referring to a line in the song's chorus.[3]

On December 13, 2023, Grande shared through her Instagram a picture of a man with a tuning fork in his hand, which was used in the single's music video. A picture of Ariana on set alongside her backup dancers was soon taken on December 19, 2023, then later posted on her Instagram stories.[4]

On December 27, 2023, R.E.M. Beauty packages were sent to fans with a blurred photocard close-up of Grande's lips partially revealing the cover art and the message "see you next year ♡" (which were pictures taken in the music video set), as well as the red lipstick.

On January 4, 2024, Grande was spotted wearing a crew neck sweatshirt with the song's title on it. The same day, Joan Grande liked some tweets about it being the lead single of Grande's upcoming studio album, seemingly confirming its existence.[5][6][7]

On January 6, 2024, the R.E.M. Beauty social media accounts posted a video with the caption "put your lipstick on", which was then rumored (and now confirmed) to be a lyric from the song.

The next day on January 7, 2024, it was announced through her Instagram that it was going to be the lead single of Eternal Sunshine. The same day, Grande shared a link for the pre-sales of the CD, and the Sweetener Instagram account posted a few new sections of the cover, revealing a new picture. An email was also sent with the "💋" emoji with a new section of the cover as well. Grande reposted Doug Middlebrook's post on her Instagram story, which had said "say that shit with your chest", teasing some of the lyrics.

On January 11, 2024, Grande shared a trailer for the music video on YouTube, which released the following day. Three days later on January 14, 2024, Grande released a lyric video for the track.

On February 12, 2024, Ariana teased an upcomming suprise for the song by saying "and a very happy one month of Yes, And? excited to celebrate later this week". The Sweetener account uploaded new pictures two days later and Ariana changed her profile picture to something looking like a cut of a song cover showing a polaroid picture of her eye. Later, Mariah Carey changed her profile to a similar polaroid with her eye. On February 14, 2024, Ariana took to Instagram to announce that a remix of "yes, and?" would be released on February 16, featuring Mariah Carey.[8]

Cover Art[]

The cover was revealed on January 7, 2024, via Instagram on @sweetener. It shows a part of Grande's face with a motion blur effect on it. She has a red lipstick on and in general the cover has warm tones. The Variants EP shows Grande with her hand on her cheek with the same motion blur effect. She wears the same outfit from the eternal sunshine photoshoot.

Meaning[]

There are many theories behind the cover's meaning. The blurred effect and the cropped image of Ariana's face might represent the desire to maintain anonymity and incomplete perception of what the publicity sees and how she is being judged by people who can't see the full picture. The only thing not blurred in the cover is Ariana's eye, which may signify a loss of identity, incompleteness, or emotional impact. On the cover, Grande wears a red lipstick, possibly the shade "Attention" of R.E.M. Beauty that she teased at the beginning of the year, symbolizing the attention she receives for things that don't matter.

Promotion[]

US Pop Radio Stations called the song an excellent single, as they had early access to it.[9]

Music Video[]

On January 11, 2024, Grande shared a teaser for the music video of the song, featuring the acronym "AG7" as a nod to her upcoming seventh studio album, Eternal Sunshine. The teaser also showcases geographical coordinates (41°03′59″N 71°95′45″W), pinpointing Montauk, New York, a significant filming location for the movie "Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind" (2004), a film Grande admires for its lead actor, Jim Carrey.[10] The next day on January 12, 2024, the music video was released as a premiere on YouTube through Vevo.

The music video opens with critics judging Ariana, such as not being a singer anymore and not wanting her to be happy. The critics then walk into a warehouse where there are concrete statues of Ariana and her back up dancers featured in the video. As the critics take a seat, the statues fall apart and break, revealing Ariana and her dancers as they give a performance to the critics. Slowly throughout the video, the critics begin to enjoy the song, eventually some of them joining Ariana at the end of the song to dance. The video ends with Ariana and the dancers turning back into statues, and a new group of critics walking inside the warehouse.

Remix[]

Background[]

On February 12, 2024, Ariana teased an upcomming suprise for the song by saying "and a very happy one month of Yes, And? excited to celebrate later this week". The Sweetener account uploaded new pictures two days later and Ariana changed her profile picture to something looking like a cut of a song cover showing a polaroid picture of her eye. Later, Mariah Carey changed her profile to a similar polaroid with her eye. On Valentines Day, 2024, Ariana took to Instagram to announce that a remix of "yes, and?" would be released on February 16, featuring Mariah Carey.[12]

Critical Reception[]

Jason Lipshutz from Billboard praised the remix, noting that while it "does boast some absolutely scorching high-register work from both [...] the true beauty of this new team-up exists in the superstars combining their respective ferocities, and injecting this ode to minding your own business with even more full-hearted passion." Lipshutz also praised Carey's delivery during the second verse, adding that "she sounds phenomenal, but her personality is even more commanding than her voice." The New York Post's Chuck Arnold highlighted how "while they both have plenty of room to do their thing, it never feels like a competition," drawing parallels between Carey's contribution to the track and "all those legendary house remixes she did in the '90s," notably from the Emotions era. Writing for AudioPhix, Lee Vowell stated that "somehow, [Carey's] ethereal voice forces its way through the intro house beat and becomes the single most important instrument in the first 31 seconds" and that Carey "adds an element of harmony and character that the original does not have quite enough of." Uproxx's Derrick Rossignol also praised Carey's new verse, detailing that it "slots perfectly into the self-confident banger."

Lyrics[]

[Verse 1]
In case you haven't noticed
Well, everybody's tired
And healin' from somebody
Or somethin' we don't see just right

[Pre-Chorus]
Boy, come on, put your lipstick on (No one can tell you nothin')
Come on and walk this way through the fire (Don't care what's on their mind)
And if you find yourself in a dark situation just
Turn on your light and be like

[Chorus]
"Yes, and?"
Say that shit with your chest, and
Be your own fuckin' best friend
Say that shit with your chest
Keep moving like, "What's next?"
"Yes, and?"

[Verse 2]
Now, I'm so done with caring
What you think, no, I won't hide
Underneath your own projections
Or change my most authentic life

[Pre-Chorus]
Boy, come on, put your lipstick on (No one can tell you nothin')
Come on and walk this way through the fire (Don't care what's on their mind)
And if you find yourself in a dark situation just
Turn on your light and be like

[Chorus]
"Yes, and?"
Say that shit with your chest, and
Be your own fuckin' best friend
Say that shit with your chest
Keep moving like, "What's next?"
"Yes, and?" (Yeah)

[Bridge]
My tongue is sacred, I speak upon what I like
Protected, sexy, discerning with my time (My time)
Your energy is yours and mine is mine (Mine is mine)
What's mine is mine
My face is sitting, I don't need no disguise
Don't comment on my body, do not reply
Your business is yours and mine is mine
Why do you care so much whose dick I ride?
Why?

[Chorus]
"Yes, and?"
Say that shit with your chest, and
Be your own fuckin' best friend
Say that shit with your chest
Keep moving like, "What's next?"
"Yes, and?"
"Yes, and?"
Say that shit with your chest, and
Be your own fuckin' best friend
Say that shit with your chest
Keep moving like, "What's next?"
"Yes, and?" Yeah
